A201CSU: Volunteering in the Community…5-a-side football with The Salvation Army

Today I was asked to meet up at the St.Augustine Leisure Centre in Radford, Coventry.  The reason being that The Salvation Army come here once a week with residents to play 5-a-side football.  The benefits from doing such a simple event such as this are endless.  Confidence, team building, people learning to work together…the list goes on.  Today it was residents versus the staff.  A good game was played with quite a few goals being scored.  Football has never really been my bag but this wasn’t about the football.  It was about getting these people to follow a different path.

As with shooting ice hockey with Coventry Blaze the previous month, sports photography is not as simple as it looks.  I started off by using flash but as it was such a huge hall to light only those closest to me were being lit.  I then opted for shooting without flash.  The problem then was that I couldn’t use a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action. Bumping up the iso was the only solution.  The side effects being that some images look grainy.  However, I am pleased with the results and look forward to my next challenge.
