R.I.P Helen and Mark

with 5 comments

Many are aware that for around two years I was out on the street with Kervin Julien and Anesis Ministry helping to feed the homeless on the streets of Coventry.  Whilst doing this I introduced fellow photographer Rick Medlock to the organisation and he was only too happy to help out.  I specialised in the photography and Rick took care of making videos which involved interviewing subjects about how they came to end up on the streets.  The main aim being that we bring to light the situation for many on the streets of Coventry, and in the process, help to make a change.

One of Ricks most moving videos was the one below which interviews Helen and Mark about their circumstances and how they felt failed by an utterly confusing benefits system.  A touching, but very honest account of how they struggle on a day to day basis.

It is with sadness that I have to report that they have both been found dead, suicide being the suspected cause of death.

  1. Indeed Dean it is a damming indictment of the society we have become. It saddens me greatly when two vulnerable people like Helen and Mark are not given the help that require. I had turned up recently to film an in depth interview on there request on how they felt the system had let them down. Did turn up to conduct the interview but no response from them when I knocked on the door or tried to phone. I now now why. So very very sad.

  3. It certainly is tragic,Mark said in the interview “the system is un kind”,I could think of more harsh a word, the system certainly has got it wrong, the more vulnerable the person the less help they will get,it saddens me to think of people who deliberately fraud the system and they are given everything and have 52″ T.V’s etc ,yet true honest folk like Helen and Mark are not given the help they truly require. There are too many people out there who are being failed and let down in our sickening society.very sad.

  4. Hope you don’t mind this Dean but in this short video Mark talks about how he was abused as a child and how once again the system let him down.
