351mc Photography and Narrative: Grozny: Nine Cities

Whilst searching for a fixer earlier this year to help with my project in Ukraine, I managed to gain not only a local fixer, but someone who was also a documentary photographer.  Maria Morina has been working on a project with five others in Grozny, Chechnya. Together they form ‘Verso’.  Verso is a Russian collective of five emerging documentary photographers, concentrated on making stories on social change.

In a strange twist of fate, I was introduced to a few of the other members of Verso whilst I was at Perpignan earlier this year.  I had been watching their project closely online since returning back to the U.K, and was pleased to hear that they were the Grand Prize Winner in the Multimedia Category of the Lens Culture International Exposure Awards 2011.

At present, I am trying to produce my own photofilm so naturally I was drawn to the work of Verso and what they were working on.
