352mc Professional Photographic Practice: Suky Best talk and lecture
For todays lecture, photographer Suky Best came to talk and also mentor a selection of people within the group. The main topic of her talk was about funding and commissions. This is something, that as students nearing graduation we need to seriously think about. Funding I know can give a project legs, and in turn make it happen.
As well as showing us a great selection of her work, Suky managed to give us an insight into the industry and how best to present ourselves within it. She stated ‘make the best of who you are, what you are doing and the position you are in’. This referred to the fact that we need to lever everything we can to our advantage. To make the most of whatever position that we end up working in and creating opportunities for ourselves.
We are all aware of the advantages of networking and Suky kept the advice simple… ‘the best networking you can do is to make friends’. It was stressed to us that this should not be underestimated.
My cv is something that I am working on at present as graduation is drawing nearer by the day, and Suky was quick to hand out some tips. She explained that it is something which you may be best having a few different versions of. Continuing to say that your cv constantly needs tweaking to keep it current and up to date.
So what are the errors that people are making these days within the work that they produce? Suky felt that ‘In order to make good work you have to make a lot of bad work, but in turn, this means that you must produce a lot of work. I think often, people don’t make enough work. You should be banging it out all the time.’ Wise words and something that I will take on board.
