352mc Professional Photographic Practice: The wandering Babushka

with 2 comments

I captured this image on KIev’s main drag, Khreschatyk Street.  A Babushka walks slowly past an advert promoting the Euro 2012 football tournament.  I recognised the Babushka.  She sits in the underground with the dog and cat in the shopping trolley begging for change.

When I first came across her early last year I thought about the things she had seen in this often troubled country.  What she thought when she looked up at the poster.  If she understood, or was even bothered about the tournament taking place.

Like many others, I’m all for boycotting the Euro 2012 games after the jailing of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.  The jailing of political opponents cannot be tolerated, not in this day age and certainly not in a country hoping to merge into the European community.  But in Ukraine as they say ‘money talks and bullshit walks’.  Euro 2012 is the living proof of that.
