Meeting with curators for forthcoming exhibition at The Barber Institute of Fine Arts

with 2 comments

In March, my work from my ongoing project in Ukraine will be exhibited at The Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham.  It was selected to be shown by New Art West Midlands 2013, a multi-sited exhibition in Birmingham showcasing the best of the region’s emerging artistic talent.

Yesterday I met with the curation team to selected eight images from my ongoing project.   Rather than following a set narrative, the panel selected eight images which they felt reflected the current situation in Ukraine.  Images that were powerful enough to stand on their own.  They are a mixture of portraits, landscapes, buildings and advertisements.  They work, and I’m looking forward to seeing them in all their glory when the exhibition launches in March.

The exhibition catalogue printed by The Barber Institute states ‘O’Brien’s photographs illustrate a genuine understanding and compassion with the people who feature as well as an objective criticality to the wider situation.’

So make a note in your diaries.  These will be on display from the 8th March to 19th May 2013.

  1. Congratulations. Please let me know if there will be a catalog or anyway to view the exhibit online. Don’t think I can make it to Birmingham.

    • Thanks Barbara. Yes there will be a catalogue available. However I do have a downloadable PDF on my website which contains many images from my project ‘Destination Unknown’. It is located at http://www.deanobrien.co.uk under the ‘Projects’ section.
