Femen To Leave Ukraine

with one comment

Last week it was announced that controversial feminist group ‘Femen’ are to leave Ukraine.

Standing in the street bare chested, often in sexual attire was always going to get them the attention they so desperately craved, and for a while it worked.  However, many believe they shot themselves in the foot when they got on the ‘Free Pussy Riot’ bandwagon.  After deciding to take a chainsaw to a crucifix in the centre of Kyiv, it proved to be a step too far.  This crucifix had nothing to do with the whole feminist thing as it served as a memorial for the victims of Communism.

As one can imagine, this only ended up backfiring on the group which inevitably lost them a lot of support which they never seemed to pull back.  When you combine this with stories circulating about who actually finances and hires them, the clock of credibility and integrity was starting to tick.  The money to cover the endless fines, travel expenses, court appearances and bail not to mention the office in Kyiv (and now in Europe) etc.. had to come from somewhere.

Rumours are amidst with one forum stating:

‘FEMEN is a paid to protest advertising organization. It is actually run by a 30 something guy in Kiev not the woman on the website. He organizes the girls to go to an event to raise notoriety and he charges from 10-100k USD.  For money they show up and bring notoriety. They also do free protests to keep up their group’s brand recognition because as you can imagine there is not a constant flow of groups looking to hire girls to protest their events or their enemies’ events. But any free protests are done only in order to maintain brand strength so they can charge a premium for their services.’

The fact that those who are alleged to be involved with the running of Femen work within the media has no doubt helped to apply the censorship brakes on this information as you can imagine.  Of course, within certain circles in Kyiv this is well known and in due course will inevitably become public knowledge.

The final nail in the coffin came on August 27th when the Femen offices in Kyiv were raided and Police found a hand grenade and a gun hidden under a ceiling panel.  They also found leaflets with images of Vladimir Putin and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kiril pictured with snipers’ cross-hairs.  This caused founders of the movement Alexandra Shevchenko, Anna Hutsol and Yana Zhdanova to flee Ukraine ‘fearing for their lives and for their liberty’ according to a statement on the group’s website.

  1. Interesting. They always proved a photographic cert for PA and AP and other agencies. It was a media dream for a while. Almost a “Sod the message, the packaging is just what we like” type of thinking. Which, in itself, is extremely sad.
Too many serious messages dumbed down or completely ignored.
