Which Way For Ukraine?
With all what has been going on this past week I decided to refer back to an image which I took last year in Kyiv. It is of a monument of three brothers and their sister who legend has it were the founders of Kyiv.
The monument of the brothers and sister in the image seems to sum up for me the general feeling in Ukraine at present. Going from right to left, we see the sister drifting towards the East with an almost magnetic attraction, whilst the brother directly behind her looks towards the East (keeping his distance) with his right arm out as if signalling her to change course. Then we see the second brother looks neither East nor West, almost unsure. Then finally, the brother at the rear of the boat looks back towards the West.
There were a lot of people who were better off under Soviet rule, there can be no question of that. Just ask any babushka next time you see her selling sunflower seeds outside the metro station. She won’t sit on the fence and hold back I can assure you of that.
The truth is that independence for Ukraine brought with it greed, poverty and corruption on a massive scale. It wasn’t the ‘fair’ independence that people had imagined. It turned out to be a true case of everyone for themselves. Unfortunately, over twenty years later not much has changed.
